Spalted Maple Bowl

Spalted Maple Bowl

The black abstraction in this bowl is referred to as spalting. This occurs when a particular fungus infiltrates the tree. Eventually, the fungus will consume the tree, but if timing is just perfect the result is rarely unique. Spalting is often found in maple, and has been revered by woodworkers for years.

This particular piece of lumber over-dried, making it a bit flaky. This explains the roughness of the aesthetic and is reflected in the price. It is also motivates the use of the bowl to be limited to hard edibles (such as candies) and non-edibles such as jewelry.
